Nightline is a confidential service

Nightline is a fully confidential listening, information and supplies service provided by students, to students. All information about users of the service, their identity and the content of any visit, phone call, instant message or email received by Nightline is strictly private and confidential. Usually there are two Nightline volunteers taking a call, and they cannot see or trace phone numbers, computer IP addresses or email addresses.

Nightline does not report crimes and all calls are confidential and will never be revealed to any individuals or organisations external to Nightline, except for in these exceptional circumstances:

  • Contacting a third party on behalf of the caller

  • A call or caller is abusive, as detailed in the Abusive Calls policy

  • A caller infers knowledge of terrorist activities

  • There is a safeguarding requirement, as detailed in the Safeguarding policy

  • A criminal offence is committed by a caller against Nightline or the Nightline volunteers on duty

  • A Nightline volunteer is ordered by police warrant or court summons to give evidence regarding a call.

Nightline sometimes collects anonymous data

Nightline is committed to protecting personal data and respecting the rights of the individuals whose personal data is collected and used. We comply with all relevant laws and adopts good practice in handling personal data entrusted to us. Nightline is also clear and transparent about the data we collect and how it is used.
